
The US based Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and InSphero is offering the HUMAIN Award to five laboratories, to expand access to, and accelerate the uptake of, human-specific nonanimal approaches.
Awards may cover disease modeling, predictive safety and efficacy screening, or mechanistic and investigative safety testing. Each award includes InSphero technology or services, training and customized support from InSphero experts, and funding for scientific promotion of results.
Award Details
Five awardees will receive:
- $20,000 USD toward InSphero technology (Akura™ Spheroid Microplates, 3D InSight™ Microtissues, ARCTis™ Cryo Microtissues) or services (3D InSight™ Services).
- Access to an inaugural one-day training course in the United States or Switzerland, with a $1,000 travel grant per award.
- Two hours of monthly consulting with InSphero experts.
- Up to $2,000 in travel grants to present findings at scientific conferences.
- $2,500 USD towards open access publication fees.
Award Timeline
- The deadline to apply was Sep. 5, 2023.
- Awardees will be selected by a panel of experts from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, InSphero, and other scientists, then notified in September 2023.
- Kickoff and training will begin in October 2023.
- Project execution to be carried out between October 2023 and June 2024.
- Awardees will present their results in conjunction with the Microphysiological Systems World Summit in June 2024.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this award, applicants should:
- Work in an academic or nonprofit research sector.
- Be passionate about utilizing human-specific models as an alternative to animal testing.
- Be willing to travel to the United States or Switzerland for hands-on training in the fall or winter of 2023.
