Time for 3R: How to improve your research projects by 3R- related online resources

Back to Overview

You are here:

Due to Corona, scientists spend more time on homework and project planning. This situation bears great chances for the improvement of research quality and animal welfare. Take your time for 3R now!

- Register your animal based studies at the Animal Study Registry
- Plan your new experiments with the PREPARE guidelines
- Search for alternative methods with the EURL ECVAM Search Guide
- Search for 3R online tutorials at the new 3R-SMART website

In addition, tools for the general improvement of research quality can contribute to the 3Rs. The BIH QUEST Center has set up a helpful toolbox and educational resources.

Animal Study Registry
In order to prevent selective reporting, the Animal Study Registry provides a platform to register an exact study plan for studies involving animals prior to the start of experiments. Your study receives a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) number - which marks it as your intellectual property - and you can restrict the visibility of your study for a period of up to five years.
The Animal Study Registry is run by the German Centre for the Protection of Laboratory Animals (Bf3R) at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).

Charité 3R sponsors the first entries announced from Charité with € 500 each for research, travel etc. This contingent is not yet completely exhausted. Please inform us of your study registration by email to charite3r@charite.de.

PREPARE Guidelines
PREPARE stands for “Planning Research and Experimental Procedures on Animals: Recommendations for Excellence”. A group of experts from the UK and Norway, led by the Secretary of Norecopa, has produced this comprehensive set of guidelines. They complement reporting guidelines such as ARRIVE and cover all stages of quality assurance, from the management of an animal facility or population to the individual procedures which form part of a study.

The EURL ECVAM search guide: Good search practice on animal alternatives
The guide has been specifically developed to support untrained database users in finding high quality information on relevant alternative strategies and methods to animal experiments from the wide range of sources available on the web.

3R-SMART – Alternativmethoden für Tierversuche
3R-SMART (3R-Schulungsplattform für Methodische Ansätze zur Reduktion von Tierversuchen) is a new training platform for methodological approaches to reducing animal experiments.
The contributions on this page are available partly in German and partly in English. Most of them are audio recordings of lectures accompanied by the corresponding presentations. The BMBF-funded project is coordinated and developed by the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover Foundation and the Philipps Universität Marburg.
