Around 36 international PhD students and PostDocs from various scientific disciplines participated in the Summer School "ReThink3R 2.0 - Next Generation Science with(out) mice" from August 23rd to 26th 2022 and jointly developed creative and user-centered solutions to various problems in the implementation of the 3Rs using the Design Thinking innovation method. These include, for example, "EasyRead", an additional function of the database Pubmed for translating abstracts into more general language to facilitate communication between different disciplines, or "TIND3R", an app for bringing together researchers working on 3R approaches who would like more opportunities for exchange.
The mix of key note lectures by international experts from the broader 3R field, short presentations by the participants, teamwork, warm-ups, coffee and lunch breaks, and social events with typical Berlin flair also offered the young researchers the opportunity to exchange ideas about 3R research and to establish new networks in an inspiring and relaxed atmosphere during the four-day Summer School. An insight into the atmosphere of the ReThink3R Summer School can be found in the photo gallery.
With the idea of expanding their two-day ReThink3R workshop to an international Summer School, Laura Behm and Annemarie Lang, the leading minds behind "ReThink3R" were able to convince the "Begegnungszonen" of the Joachim Herz Foundation in 2019 and acquire a grant of 40.000 Euros. In addition to the other sponsors AniMatch UG (haftungsbeschränkt) and Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (USA; travel grant), Charité 3R also provided financial and organizational support for the Summer School.
