Animal Experimenters

All persons entrusted with laboratory animals - PIs and their deputies as well as staff involved in animal experimentation projects - are obliged to undergo further training in the field of laboratory animal science and animal welfare. The Charité Research Institutes for Experimental Medicine (FEM) offer a corresponding continuing education program. Since 2020, this has taken place in an expanded form in cooperation with Charité 3R.

Courses for animal experimenters

Since the transposition of Directive 2010/63/EU into national law, there is an obligation for all persons working with laboratory animals to undergo further training in the field of laboratory animal science and animal welfare. This group of persons includes PIs and their deputies as well as staff involved in animal experimentation projects (§3 and 4 TierschutzversuchstierVO).

The modalities and the number of hours to be worked have not been clearly defined so far. The Berlin authority (LAGeSo) expects 8 hours annually.

How can you maintain or extend your acquired expertise? The FEM and Charité 3R offer different training series which take place at 1-2 month intervals. The lectures are held online or on-site alternately at all Charité campi and at different times. If possible, English language courses will also be held.

Please find a detailed list of upcoming educational events offered by Charité or other institutions, covering topics of animal welfare and laboratory animal sciences, on the Charité-internal Refinement-Sharepoint (limited access for Charité-affiliates only).
