SPRIN-D FUNKE competition on tissue engineering
The Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation SPRIND is creating spaces for innovators, where they can take risks and think radically different.
SPRIND challenges are aimed at participants from all over Europe. Through collaborations, you can also involve partners from all over the world. We fund your work and coach each team individually so they can reach their full potential. Like its big sister SPRIND Challenges, SPRIND Funke is an innovation competition for pioneers with world-changing ideas - but even faster. Animal Research Tomorrow | 3R Awards
ART 3R Awards aim to support innovative ideas by young scientists for the development and testing of Replacement, Reduction and/or Refinement approaches in animal research. The grant proposals are evaluated by an independent jury and grants of up to 5.000 €.

Animal Research Tomorrow | SciComm Awards
ART Science Communication (SciComm) Awards aim to support young science communicators in promoting innovative communication strategies and/or creating resources and tools for promoting greater transparency on animal research. The proposals sums of up to 3.000 €.

Research funding by the GV SOLAS
Members of GV-SOLAS can apply for research funding with a maximum funding amount of max. €25,000 each year. The GV-SOLAS offer to support research projects would like to make a contribution so that ideas for deepening the knowledge of experimental animals can be implemented in a concrete project.

Ursula M. Handel Animal Welfare Prize
The DFG awards the prize to researchers who strive to improve animal welfare in research. This includes in particular the development of procedures that contribute to the reduction, refinement and replacement of animal experiments. The prize, worth a total of 80,000 euros, is awarded every two years.

CAAT Humane Education and CAAT Reduction Grants
The Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) is now accepting proposals for the 2023 Reduction and Humane Education Grants. The Reduction Grant is intended for researchers who conduct systematic reviews, meta-analyses, or citation analyses of animal studies or similar work with the goal to reduce animal use in science. The Humane Education Grant is given for the development of animal-free training resources for veterinary, medical or laboratory courses.
Each grant includes prize money of $6,000 USD.Date of deadline: 15.11.2023
Alternative methods to animal experiments of BMBF
The aim of the BMBF funding guideline is to replace further animal experiments with alternative methods in the sense of the 3R concept and to increase the attractiveness of the field of animal experiment replacement methods for researchers, as well as to strengthen the validation, utilization and dissemination of animal experiment alternative methods that have already been developed. The application takes place in German language.

We support the 6R model of the BIH QUEST Centre, which adds Robustness, Registration and Reporting to Replacement, Reduction and Refinement, and would like to draw your attention to the QUEST Centre's calls for proposals and prizes, such as the prize for pre-registration. The prizes are awarded on a continuous basis.
ANYTIME: Promotion of alternative methods through Animalfree Research
Research funding from the Animalfree Research Foundation supports projects that are suitable for replacing (Replacement) or reducing (Reduction) animal experiments.
Applications can be submitted at any time and takes place in German.

The CRACK IT Challenges Competition
CRACK IT is a challenge-led competition that funds collaborations between industry, academics and SMEs to solve business and scientific Challenges which will deliver 3Rs benefits, either by improving business processes or developing a commercial product. Depending on the Challenge, contracts of up to £1M for up to three years are available.

HUMAIN Award offered by The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and InSphero
The US based Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and InSphero is offering the HUMAIN Award to five laboratories, to expand access to, and accelerate the uptake of, human-specific nonanimal approaches.
Awards may cover disease modeling, predictive safety and efficacy screening, or mechanistic and investigative safety testing. Each award includes InSphero technology or services, training and customized support from InSphero experts, and funding for scientific promotion of results.Funding priority "Molecular Basis of Disease Genesis" of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation
In the funding priority "Molecular basis of disease development", support is provided for molecular biological investigations into diseases whose development is decisively based on genetic defects or in which gene variants contribute to the development of complex diseases. The investigations can be carried out on cell and/or animal models, but should at least partly be carried out on disease-relevant human tissue samples and/or cells.
EPAA Refinement Prize 2023
The European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA) is proud to announce its 2023 Refinement Prize. This prize of €6,000 will be granted to a laboratory technician, animal caretaker or technologist who has demonstrated outstanding achievements in new, novel approaches to advance the implementation and/or awareness raising of refinement of animal testing.
The 2023 Excellence in Refinement Award
The award includes a plaque, $5000 honorarium, and up to $2000 for travel. It recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to refining alternatives in animal testing. Residents of any country are eligible to be nominated. Open to nominees worldwide.

Tierschutzpreise des Landes Berlin 2023
The Berlin Animal Welfare Awards are presented in four categories to honor individuals, animal welfare organizations, or initiatives that have made outstanding contributions to animal welfare in Berlin. The award can be given for a lifetime achievement, an outstanding individual accomplishment, or the dedicated efforts of an organization to protect animals in Berlin.
HORIZON-HLTH-2024-TOOL-05-06-two-stage: Innovative non-animal human-based tools and strategies for biomedical research
This topic supports activities aimed at achieving expected impacts of Destination 5, "Unlocking the full potential of new tools, technologies, and digital solutions for a healthy society." Proposals should aim to deliver results that contribute to the following outcomes: utilizing more human-relevant tools and strategies in research, reducing animal use in biomedical research, providing access to improved human-relevant tools for health technology developers, and benefiting healthcare providers and patients with innovative tools for improved disease prediction, prevention, and treatment.

Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC International)
The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC International) is a private, non-profit organisation that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programmes.
International Foundation for Ethical Research (IFER)
IFER Graduate Fellowships are one-year grants for projects that support the development, acceptance and implementation of innovative scientific methodologies that advance science and reduce or replace the use of animals in research, testing or education.
Foundation set
The set foundation supports a wide range of scientific projects that make a targeted and verifiable contribution to reducing, avoiding or improving animal experiments. The foundation promotes research into the development of alternative methods, but also provides financial support for publications, congresses and events.
Bf3R research funding in the area of 3R
The funding is aimed in particular at young scientists who would like to implement their ideas as part of a proof-of-concept study in order to collect experimental data for a successful application to larger funding programs (e.g. DFG, BMBF).
Berlin research award "Alternative methods to animal experiments" of the LAGeSo
Research projects from Berlin or Brandenburg that contribute to avoiding or reducing the use of laboratory animals or to reducing the stress on the animals in animal experiments are funded with up to €30,000. The award by the Landesamtes für Gesundheit und Soziales for 2023 has not yet been published. The information on this page is constantly updated.
Animal Welfare Research Prize of the BMEL
Methods or procedures are sought that can replace animal experiments or reduce their number. The award is endowed with up to €25,000. Young scientists in particular are encouraged to apply.

Felix Wankel Animal Welfare Research Award
The prize is awarded for outstanding, experimental and innovative scientific work, the aim or result of which is to replace or limit animal experiments or to promote animal welfare in general. The prize is endowed with a maximum of €30,000. The call for entries for the 2023 prize was limited to October 30, 2022, and the prize is generally awarded every two years. The information on this page is constantly updated.
German Animal Welfare Award | Deutscher Tierschutzpreis
The nationwide prize honors animal lovers for their sustainable commitment to animals. It is endowed with a total of €7,000 and is awarded by the German Animal Welfare Association together with the brands Pedigree and Whiskas as well as the magazines FUNK UHR and SUPER TV.
3Rs Science Prize
The EPAA aims to promote the development, validation and acceptance of 3Rs alternative approaches (replacement, reduction and refinement of testing on animals). Scientists working on relevant methods for regulatory testing (e.g. safety, efficacy, batch testing) providing an outstanding contribution to the use of the 3Rs may apply for the prize.
3RS Student Grants
EPAA is providing assistance to exceptional students and young researchers who have made noteworthy contributions in the field of alternative approaches to animal testing, enabling them to participate in one of two conferences.
Funding for preclinical confirmatory studies and systematic reviews
The aim of this funding measure is to support the methods and phases of preclinical research in Germany that contribute to increasing the meaningfulness, robustness and reliability of scientific preclinical research results and thus improve their translation towards application.
ARDF ANNUAL OPEN GRANT PROGRAM
This program of The Alternatives Research & Development Foundation funds research projects to develop alternative methods to advance science and replace or reduce the use of animals in research.
EC3R national and international outgoing lab visit program
Travel reimbursements of up to € 3.000 will be provided to enable Berlin graduates to visit national and international 3R laboratories of excellence.
International 3Rs Prize of the NC3Rs
The NC3Rs awards an annual prize of approximately €30,000 to a scientific publication that presents outstanding and original approaches to replacing, reducing or refining the use of animals in research.
