Ausbildung

Alternatives to Animal Models in Biomedical Research: the Principles of 3Rs

Kurs "Alternatives to animal models" im Sommersemester 2019

Animal experimentation is still playing a major role in biomedical and translational research. However, due to limited transferability on the one hand as well as strong technological progress and ethical concerns on the other, alternative models get more in focus to address central scientific questions. Therefore, this 1-week PhD course introduces along the 3Rs principles of “Replacement, Reduction and Refinement” the current developments in this field. In lectures and hands-on sessions, (mainly) Charité research groups present innovative methods such as 3D (bio-)printing, organoids or in silico modelling and how these could contribute to minimize animal use. Moreover, in interactive seminars we discuss ethical aspects how animal welfare in biomedical research can be improved.

Animal Ethics and the 3Rs principles in Biomedical Research: Replace, Reduce, Refine

Animal experimentation is still playing a major role within the field of biomedical and translational research. However, due to limited transferability on the one side as well as strong technological progress and ethical concerns on the other, alternative models get more in focus to address central scientific questions. This course introduces the 3Rs principles of “Replacement, Reduction and Refinement” and in interactive seminars we discuss ethical aspects how animal welfare in biomedical research can be improved.

This 7 h-lecture & Workshop is integrated in our 1-week course, Alternatives to Animal Models in Biomedical Research – the Principles of 3Rs, but independent attendance is possible.

ReThink 3R

Would you like to learn more about the 3Rs principles for animal experiments?

Charité 3R and the ReThink3R-Team invite you to an interactive workshop focusing on the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine). Think about new approaches to the 3Rs or figure out why sometimes it is so difficult to implement the 3Rs in daily research. By using Design Thinking methods, you get an unbiased and playful approach to the 3Rs and find creative space to exchange experiences and work on ways to further implement these principles.
Ideally, participants in the "Rethink 3R" course have already gained initial experience in the field of 3Rs, e.g. by participating in the course "Alternatives to Animal Models in Biomedical Research", for finding highly innovative solutions. As a minimum level, participants are expected to read the information material sent out 10 days before the course.
